Mohammed Shami’s Fitness Worries: Big Setback for Team India?
Mohammed Shami’s fitness has become a major concern for Team India as they prepare for upcoming ODI matches and the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. Cricket analyst Aakash Chopra has put the team and selectors on high alert, stating that Shami “doesn’t look ready” and India might need an additional fast bowler.
Shami, who recently returned to international cricket after over a year, has played only two T20Is since his comeback. While he picked up three wickets in the fifth T20I at Wankhede Stadium, his performances have been inconsistent, raising doubts about his match readiness.
Bumrah’s Absence Adds to India’s Bowling Worries
The concerns around Shami’s form are further intensified by Jasprit Bumrah’s absence. Bumrah, who was expected to lead the pace attack, has not yet joined the squad due to a back injury, making India’s fast-bowling department look weaker.
Cricket experts believe that if Shami fails to regain full fitness in time, India will have to restructure their squad before the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.
Aakash Chopra Warns India Needs Another Fast Bowler
Speaking on the matter, Aakash Chopra emphasized the importance of including another pacer in the squad.
“India will have to drop someone to add another seamer. You can’t take more than 15 players as it is an ICC event, not a bilateral series,” Chopra said.
He also pointed out that making changes mid-tournament is only possible with ICC approval, making squad selection even more crucial.
Mohammed Siraj Likely to Join Squad?
With Mohammed Siraj not currently part of the ODI squad, speculation is growing that he may be included as a backup pacer.
“Arshdeep Singh is a good bowler, but he hasn’t played many ODIs. I feel the selection committee will pick one more fast bowler. Siraj will likely travel to Dubai for the Champions Trophy,” Chopra added.
Selectors on High Alert as India Prepares for ODIs
With India’s pace attack lacking depth, the selection committee, led by Ajit Agarkar, is now under pressure to reassess the squad. If Shami fails to regain match fitness, a last-minute replacement could be necessary.
The final squad announcement for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 is expected soon, and all eyes will be on whether India makes changes to strengthen their pace attack.
