“Champions Trophy feels like…”: Abdul Razzak on Hosting ICC Tournament After 30 Years

A Historic Moment for Pakistan Cricket

Pakistan is set to host the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, marking the return of a major ICC event to the country after nearly three decades. The tournament is scheduled to begin on February 19, with the opening match between Pakistan and New Zealand in Karachi.

Cricket Returns After Years of Uncertainty

Pakistan had been deprived of hosting international cricket for years after a 2009 terror attack on the Sri Lankan team in Lahore. Due to security concerns, top teams refrained from touring the country, and Pakistan had to play its home matches at neutral venues, mainly in the UAE. However, the Champions Trophy 2025 signifies a turning point, bringing international cricket back on a grand scale.

Excitement Among Cricket Fans

For cricket lovers in Pakistan, this event is not just another tournament—it is a moment of redemption. Fans are eager to witness international teams playing on home soil, rekindling memories of a time when Pakistan was a regular host of global cricket events. Haji Abdul Razzak, a passionate cricket fan, recalls the excitement of hosting international matches in the 1990s. “Terrorism took everything away from us. I am overjoyed to see a global event returning to our country and I feel like it will be my birthday,” he said.

Teams and Hybrid Format for India’s Matches

Eight teams will participate in the Champions Trophy 2025—Pakistan, India, Australia, England, South Africa, New Zealand, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan. However, due to ongoing political tensions, India’s matches will be played in Dubai, following a decision by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the Indian government. This hybrid model allows the tournament to proceed while addressing security concerns.

Pakistan’s Chance to Shine on the Global Stage

With the Champions Trophy 2025, Pakistan aims to showcase its capability as a safe and welcoming destination for international cricket. The success of this event could open doors for future ICC tournaments and bilateral series in the country.
