Why Pakistan Was Eliminated From ICC Champions Trophy 2025

Pakistan’s journey in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 has come to an unfortunate end after consecutive losses. Their latest defeat came against India, who comfortably chased down a target of 242 runs in Dubai with more than seven overs to spare. With New Zealand’s victory over Bangladesh, Pakistan has been officially knocked out of the tournament.

Pakistan’s Batting Struggles

Batting first, Pakistan managed only 241 runs in 49.4 overs. Saud Shakeel was the top scorer with 62 runs, while Mohammad Rizwan contributed 46. The two shared a crucial 104-run partnership, but their dismissals at key moments cost Pakistan dearly. The team played 152 dot balls, failing to rotate the strike or build momentum.

For India, Kuldeep Yadav led the bowling attack with three wickets, reaching the milestone of 300 international wickets. Hardik Pandya and Harshit Rana bowled economically, taking three wickets between them.

India’s Dominant Chase

India’s chase started with an early setback as Rohit Sharma departed for just 31 runs. However, Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli built a steady 69-run partnership, followed by a match-winning stand between Kohli and Shreyas Iyer. Kohli’s 51st ODI century guided India to a comfortable win.

Key Reasons for Pakistan’s Elimination

1. Too Many Dot Balls

Pakistan’s batting approach lacked urgency. 152 dot balls (25.2 overs) in a 50-over match put them under pressure. India’s pacers bowled 85 dot balls, keeping Pakistan’s scoring rate low.

2. Poor Shot Selection

After a strong partnership, Rizwan and Shakeel played reckless shots and got out in quick succession. Rizwan fell to Axar Patel while Shakeel attempted an unnecessary pull shot off Pandya, throwing away his wicket at a crucial time.

3. Kohli’s Masterclass

Virat Kohli was once again the difference-maker. His ability to anchor the innings, rotate the strike, and accelerate when needed put Pakistan under pressure. He built two crucial partnerships, ensuring India’s smooth chase.

What’s Next for India?

India is now in the semi-finals of the Champions Trophy 2025 and will face New Zealand on March 2 in their final group-stage match. With back-to-back wins, they are among the favorites for the title.
