Jasprit Bumrah Ruled Out of Champions Trophy | India’s Big Blow

India’s Champions Trophy 2025 campaign has hit a setback as Jasprit Bumrah has been officially ruled out due to a lower back injury. Bumrah suffered the injury during the 5th Test against Australia in Sydney and was unable to bowl in the second innings. Despite efforts at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) for rehabilitation, he couldn’t recover in time for the tournament.

Harshit Rana Steps In As Replacement

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed in a press release that Harshit Rana, a promising fast bowler from Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), will replace Bumrah in the squad. Rana recently featured in the first two ODIs against England and performed well, making him an obvious choice for selection.

India is set to begin their Champions Trophy campaign against Bangladesh on February 20, and Rana’s inclusion will strengthen the pace attack alongside Mohammed Shami and Arshdeep Singh.

Surprise Change: Varun Chakravarthy Replaces Yashasvi Jaiswal

In an unexpected move, Varun Chakravarthy has been included in India’s squad, replacing Yashasvi Jaiswal. Chakravarthy, who recently made his ODI debut in the England series, adds depth to India’s spin attack.

However, this decision raises concerns as India now has only two specialist openers—Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill—with no backup opener in the squad. This could leave the team vulnerable in case of injuries or form issues.

Jaiswal, Siraj, and Dube Named Non-Travelling Reserves

While Jaiswal, along with Mohammed Siraj and Shivam Dube, has been left out of the main squad, they have been named non-travelling reserves. They could be called up if needed during the tournament.

India’s Challenge Without Bumrah

Bumrah’s absence is a major blow to India’s bowling attack, especially in pressure situations. His ability to deliver yorkers at the death has been a key factor in India’s success. The team will now rely on Shami, Arshdeep, and Harshit Rana to step up in crunch moments.

What’s Next for India?

As the Champions Trophy kicks off, India will need to quickly adjust their game plan without their star bowler. While the inclusion of Varun Chakravarthy strengthens the spin department, the lack of an extra opener could be a risk.

With Bangladesh as their first opponent on February 20, all eyes will be on India’s squad to see how they perform without Bumrah and whether Rana can fill the void.
